Solihull Enterprise Centre

Built during the late 1960s, the borough of Chelmsley Cross has traditionally been the engine of the West Midlands economy. Growth in the area, however, stalled during the global recession of 2008—2010 which led Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC) to draw up plans intended to nurture new business and encourage job creation in the area.

Opening its doors during a grand unveiling in January 2015, the £2m purpose built facility is part of the Chelmund’s Cross Development aiming to regenerate the borough and features seminar rooms, hot-desking areas and cost-effective office space for local businesses be they start-up companies, sole traders or larger organisations.

CommunityUK (now Digital Unity Group) successfully responded to the Council’s invitation to tender and now CommunityUK’s Central Network Management System forms the heart of the Enterprise Centre’s data & voice service provision, allowing internet connectivity and voice services to be brought into the Enterprise building.

The system also manages the distribution to and use of these facilities by the tenants and visitors within the building, as well as providing residents living in a nearby social housing block with completely free 4Mbps of wireless broadband.

As champions of “Open Source” software (which ensures our client’s are not locked into a brand or  supplier), CommunityUK's Network Management Server runs a fully custom configured and license free Security and Network Management System.

Through our unique system, CommunityUK manages:

  • VPNs;
  • Proxy Server and Web Monitoring/Blocking;
  • Bandwidth Control and Quality of Service (QoS);
  • DHCP and DNS;
  • User & Individual Network Point Access & Authorisation;
  • All Incoming/Outgoing Internet communication connections;
  • Network Security including Full Firewall;
  • Server Load Balancing;
  • Network Reporting & Monitoring

CommunityUK's fully-managed network Switch then provides distribution and additional management of the Network, managing Internet access for both the internal wired network, along with the internal and external WiFi networks.

Low-cost internet telephony is provided to businesses via SIP Trunks to our central Call Termination and Billing System.

CommunityUK's VoIP PABX also features fully custom configured Open Source and license free products that are in use across organisations of all sizes across the globe. This system manages:

  • Call Conferencing;
  • Extension Provisioning – Including individual Direct Dial 0330 Numbers for all users/extensions;
  • All internal voice calls;
  • All incoming and outgoing Voice Calls;
  • Call Data Recording;
  • Voicemail;
  • Automated Attendant for Central Reception.

CommunityUK also provides free 4MB WiFi Internet Access to all public areas of the Enterprise Centre, the Council’s Office area in a nearby primary school, the public plaza surrounding the enterprise centre and to social housing residents in a housing block adjacent to the centre.

CommunityUK continues to meet the high-level of service expected by Enterprise Centre businesses and the requirements set out. As well as extending the provision of free WiFi within the centre to enable greater use of the centre’s meeting rooms, we are working with the council to look at how CommunityUK could provide the Councils own corporate connectivity within the centre.
