River Clyde Homes

With a population of over 44,000, Greenock is a historic industrial town that lies by the south bank of the River Clyde. Traditionally, the town relied on shipbuilding, sugar refining and wool manufacturing for employment but none of these industries are part of Greenock’s economy today. The town now relies on electronics manufacture, telecoms, insurance, banking and shipping export.

As one of Greenock’s largest Social Housing Providers, River Clyde Homes is a forward thinking, ‘not for profit’ that owns and manages over 6,000 homes and provides factoring services to a further 2,250 homes, who is currently undertaking a large-scale project to refurbish its housing stock.

They aim to ensure that their customers are at the heart of everything they do, provide an excellent customer experience, create sustainable homes and places, improve energy efficiency and reduce fuel poverty within their properties, as well increase support for customers.

This ethos has led River Clyde Homes to partner with CommunityUK (now Digital Unity Group) on an ambitious Wireless Broadband and Digital Inclusion pilot project involving 14 tenements and 84 apartments at John Street. The project has now entered an exciting stage with residents already accessing FREE 4MB WiFi via high-tech hot-spots and soon to be provided with, yet again FREE, Wireless Broadband routers.

With River Clyde Homes already undertaking a multi-million pound regeneration project across its housing stock, the installation of CommunityUK’s high-speed Wireless Broadband network was strategically planned to coincide with the refurbishment of the John Street complex in July 2015.

CUK has been River Clyde Homes’s partner in both designing and implementing the projects WiFi approach, and in the ongoing management of the service.

With the system now live, Home Owners can access the network through tactically positioned 2.4GHz WiFi hotspots which ensure blanket coverage across the complex or via their very own CommunityUK Wireless Router, which CommunityUK contractors had cabled into homes as part of the refurbishment.

The system provides completely FREE 4MB internet access with no download limits and no contract, together with low cost, higher speed services available to those tenants who want them. 

A locally installed Network Management Server  provides a high level of security to the network, protecting home owners and their families from certain types of internet content including pornography and pay day loans.

Home Owners access the network via River Clyde Homes’ branded web-portal provided by CommunityUK, which is designed to enable quick and easy registration and log-on to the service. The web-portal also includes advice on brushing-up on your digital skills and general internet usage, staying safe online, job hunting and help with benefits, access to River Clyde Homes’ online services and links to relevant local organisations.

This isn’t, however, where the story ends. River Clyde Homes has also partnered with Future Skills Inverclyde, the Big Lottery Funded project whose aim it is to provide help with money management, basic computing skills and using the internet.

Future Skills will be on-hand to provide one-to-one support to those residents who need it and, through their wide range of partners in the local area, be able to help residents get the digital training they need to make the most of this incredible opportunity.

Overall, the project has been a resounding victory for all involved and all three partner organisations are looking forward to the realising the huge amount of good this project can create for John Street residents.
