Sandgate Community Trust

When a good cause or much needed community project runs in the town of Sandgate, it will usually will have some link to the Sandgate Community Trust and its chairman, David Cowell. Originally forming the Trust to save the parklands/fields within the Sandgate area, David has built a prestigious, socially responsible and environmentalist image amongst his peers.

In 2011 Kent County Council (KCC) passed an email onto David regarding a £50,000 broadband grant. With councils consisting of many different managerial and decision making levels, it was impossible for them to apply for the grant in the short timeframe remaining.

With time against him, David successfully put together a winning proposal which reflected the interest of the people of Sandgate.

Community is the lifeblood of the Sandgate Community Trust. David suggested “The chosen internet provider had to offer more than just Wifi, but instead a means to engage with the community”.

David knew he had to do his homework when searching for the perfect provider as price saving was at the top of the list of considerations for the community. Through a simple, no hassle search, David found and met up with CommunityUK (now Digital Unity Group) Managing Director, Peter Reed-Forrester.

From here they were able negotiate a service that would include a higher speed connection than what was being quoted by other providers. Finalizing on a FREE WiFi broadband connection linked with a community website, residence can email, seek local employment, access  local discount vouchers and engage with one another. Ultimately fulfilling the perfect solution David and the Trust were searching for. This wireless solution gave Sandgate a dedicated broadband connection throughout the village and has brought residents into the high speed internet age.

“We knew CommunityUK was the right provider” recalled Peter Reed-Forrester, “This project was a natural progression from the very successful networks in Hampshire, currently providing FREE Wifi Broadband to 10,000 homes, whilst boasting a very engaged and successful websites for the borough."

David Cowell said “Transactions that have to be carried out on the internet are already commonplace and this will increase more and more in the future. Whether it is making a doctor’s appointment or paying your utility bill, these organisations will look to achieve cost efficiencies by making the web the communication method of choice. Sandgate residents are now in a strong position to face these needs.”
